Built in 1840 for Caroline Pommer, the Pommer-Gentner house is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Hermann. The splendid brick dwelling, executed in the German neoclassical style, is furnished to reflect the life of a prosperous merchant in the 1830s and 1840s.
The Pommer and Gentner families were among the original founders of Hermann. The Pommers had been makers of fine piano-fortes in Philadelphia, one of which is now displayed at the Smithsonian.
Behind the house is a period four-square demonstration garden and small half-timbered barn with 19th-century tools. The nearly Strehly house reflects the life of a middle-class family.
