Washington Carver studied art and piano at Simpson College in 1890 after being denied admission to Highland University in Highland, Kansas, due to his race.

Simpson art teacher Etta Budd “recognized Carver’s talent for painting flowers and plants” and encouraged him to consider studying botany at Iowa State University, according to the college's website.
